The start
In February 2024, we founded Staaltro with the question: How can we increase the value of waste? We quickly discovered that the construction industry generates 40% of all waste and 36% of global emissions. With EU regulations pushing the industry toward sustainability, the demand for climate-neutral materials is growing. We saw an opportunity: Why throw things away when we can give them a second life? That’s why we teamed up with the industry to build smarter reuse systems. Fast forward to today, and we’re already putting our ideas to the test—starting with cable trays in a pilot with OBOS. And this is just the beginning!
The problem
The problem with reusing building materials is the inefficient, manual process of sourcing them, leading to delays and high costs. The logistics within the existing value chain don’t support reuse as an economically viable option, making reuse economically unviable for property developers and contractors.
Our solution
Staaltro simplifies buying reclaimed steel building materials by creating a reuse system for documentation, logistics, and sale of standardized materials. We focus on standardized individual steel elements, bundling them from multiple projects to ensure scale and volume. Our documentation supports environmental accounting. By collaborating with industry partners in the existing value chain we make steel reuse more cost-effective than disposal or recycling- because sustainability should make both sense and cents.
